FAQs

What is the Project Goal of The Laddoo Project?

Reduce malnutrition among Indian children through the development and distribution of a fortified food supplement.

How does The Laddoo Project plan to achieve this goal?

Through the design of a nutrient-dense food supplement called a “laddoo”, Design Impact and the Deep Griha Society (DGS) are working together to reduce malnourishment in low-income communities around Pune, India. Guided by design-driven approaches and extensive medical investigation, this work includes thorough research, partnership development with local hospitals, recipe testing, and product evaluation by the most important customers: malnourished children. With continued involvement from Design Impact Fellows, the laddoo will be scaled and distributed to malnourished children around India.

What is the need for such a program?

Every year 45,000 children die of malnutrition in the state of Maharashtra alone, (source: ‘A Report on Nutritional Crisis in Maharashtra’; Support for Advocacy and Training to Health Initiatives). Increased access to nutrient rich foods—like the laddoo—can reduce the debilitating and life-long effects of early childhood malnutrition.

How does The Laddoo Project assess the impact?

The overarching goal of this project is to reduce anemia and malnutrition among children in India. We’ll know we did it right if children that are receiving the laddoo on a daily basis have moved from malnourished to healthy height and weight levels. Our pilot project has already revealed significant positive results after just six months of the laddoo intervention.  We measure these results based onWHO guidelines.

How much does it cost to run the project annually?

Running cost of the project is between Rs2.5 lacs – Rs 3 lacs ( dependent on inflation of food prices)
